Create a diamond painted piñata birthday card that doubles as a piece of artwork!
Piñatas are one of the best things about birthdays, don't you think? Not only is this FREE printable punny birthday card adorned with an colorful piñata, but I've got a template for the piñata to be diamond painted to give as a gift along with the card! This is a simple project for diamond painters of any level and is a lot of fun to make. I love how this piñata diamond painting turned out, and I hope you feel inspired to give it a try!
To make this Piñata Birthday Card, you will need these supplies:
- Piñata Card + Template Printable (for personal use only)
- 2.8mm Diamond Beads - white, black, red, orange, yellow, green, blue
- Blank Diamond Fabric Roll
- Dotting Tool Kit
- Scissors
- Removable Glue Dots
Cut out the piñata pattern template and set it aside. Next, trim a piece of diamond fabric roll to the same size as the template. Gather a collection of diamond beads in the following colors: white, black, red, orange, yellow, green, blue and a dotting tool kit. The tool kit consists of a diamond paint pen, diamond bead tray, and wax.
The grid section of the fabric roll is coated with strong adhesive and has a clear cover on top, just like a traditional diamond painting. The only difference is that this fabric is blank so that you can "paint" your own creations!
Use masking tape to hold the fabric grid down on your work surface. Next to the squares of the grid, I wrote numbers along the side and bottom so that I could reference the template easier to add my design. This step is totally optional, but was incredibly helpful for me.
Take the lid off of the wax container and poke the end of the diamond paint pen into the wax. The end of the pen is hollow, so poking it into the wax fills up the end of the pen with sticky wax to help pick the diamond beads up easily.
Decide which color of diamonds you want to start with on the project. I went with black so that I had an outline to work with afterward when placing the other diamond colors. Pour the diamonds into the diamond tray and gently shake it so that most of the diamonds are facet-side up.
Gently press the pen onto the top of a faceted diamond bead in the tray. If after a while it becomes hard to pick up diamonds, press the tip of the pen into the wax again to refill.
Once the diamond is stuck to the tip of the pen, move the diamond over to the square on the fabric that coordinates with the template. The adhesive on the fabric is a lot stickier than the wax in the pen, so the diamond will stick to the canvas immediately!
As you add more diamonds, the image will slowly come together. Diamond painting can be a little slow as you get used to it, but you will get faster with practice!
Once the black diamonds are all in place, choose whatever color you want to work on next! I chose blue, and these particular diamonds have some extra shimmer - which you know I LOVE! Just like with the black diamonds, refer to the template on the placement of all of the blue diamonds.
After the blue diamonds are all in place, move on to the next color, and then the next, until the image is complete. I saved the white diamond beads for last, because those are the easiest ones - just fill in all of the empty space!
Once complete, remove the tape from around the edges of the diamond painting. Next, I ran a brayer tool over the diamonds a couple of times with a bit of pressure to make sure the diamonds weren't going to go anywhere.
Use sharp scissors to trim away any excess fabric and to straighten out the edges, if necessary.
Print and cut the piñata birthday card out and fold it using a scoring tool. Add a couple of removable glue dots to the back of the diamond painting, and center it over the image on the card. Now you can place the card into an envelope and gift it to your favorite birthday-haver!
The great thing about placing the removable glue dots to the back of the diamond painting is that it can be easily removed from the card to display as a festive piece of art once the birthday is over. I mounted the painting on a piece of red glitter cardstock and then placed it into a 5"x5" frame to display in my craft room.
This diamond painted piñata birthday project makes me smile every time I look at it on display! I honestly find diamond painting to be a really relaxing craft, and I can't wait to get the diamonds out again for a larger project. As always, I would love to see your creations!
