Add some magic to your tumbler with a rhinestone-covered Luna Lovegood Spectrespecs Bling Straw Topper!
Everyone is toting their tumblers around with them, and it would be a tragedy to get yours mixed up with someone else's! Like Luna Lovegood (from Harry Potter), make your drink stand out from the crowd with a sparkling Spectrespecs Bling Straw Topper! Made with resin and covered in shiny rhinestones, this straw topper is stunning when the light hits it, and would make a great gift for fellow Potterheads.
To make your own Spectrespecs Bling Straw Topper, you will need these supplies:
- Spectrespecs Silicone Mold
- Famowood Glaze Coat
- Unicorn Spit - Pixie Punk Pink
- Measuring/Mixing Cups
- Stirring Sticks
- Disposable Gloves
- Packaging Tape
- E6000 Premium Adhesive
- 2mm Rhinestones - hot pink, light blue, purple
- E6000 Adhesive with Precision Tips
SAFETY FIRST: Before getting started, be sure to wear PPE, including disposable gloves. Protect your workspace, and always work in a well-ventilated area!
Prepare 20ml of resin according to package directions. Pour in equal parts resin and hardener to a small mixing cup. Slowly stir the resin together with a stir stick for two minutes or until fully combined. If the resin looks cloudy or has any streaks running through it, you need to keep stirring it until it becomes clear.
Add a small drop of Pixie Punk Pink (love that name) Unicorn SPiT to the resin (a little bit goes a LONG way) and stir with a stir stick until evenly incorporated. Give the resin a few minutes to "rest" and allow the bubbles to rise to the top.
Use the stir stick to carefully fill up the Spectrespecs Silicone Mold. Be careful to NOT overfill! Let the resin sit for a few minutes, then spritz with alcohol to remove surface bubbles.
Leave the resin to cure in an undisturbed, well ventilated area for 12-24 hours. You will know that the resin is cured and ready to remove when it is no longer tacky to the touch and pulls away from the edges of the mold.
The eye areas of the Spectrespecs are open, so they need to be filled in so that they can be covered with colored rhinestones. Prepare about 5ml of resin, and mix it well until combined. I left my resin clear, but you could split the resin in half and use Unicorn SPiT to tint one blue and the other purple if you want.
Cut a 6-8 inch piece of packaging tape and fold the ends over so that the ends aren't sticky. This makes it easier to move the project around, if necessary. Place the cured Spectrespec pieces face-down on the sticky side of the tape and press them down REALLY well. Turn the tape over and press them again. I'd recommend even scraping the tape down well with your fingernails around the eye openings so that the pieces are stuck to the tape as much as possible.
Use a stir stick or toothpick to fill the eye openings to the top. Do NOT overfill! If you are using tinted resin, pour blue into the right lens and purple into the left of one of the pieces, and then do the opposite on the other so that when the pieces are put together, the lens colors will match up.
Leave the resin to cure in an undisturbed, well ventilated area for 12-24 hours. You will know that the resin is cured and ready to remove when it is no longer tacky to the touch and pulls away from the edges of the mold.
Peel the tape away from the resin Spectrespecs pieces, and remove any sticky residue left behind with alcohol. With the pieces lying face-down, add a few small dots of E6000 Premium adhesive to both resin pieces. Let the pieces sit with the adhesive for about 2 minutes.
The E6000 Premium adhesive is the best for holding plastic materials, like these resin pieces together. It sets quickly, and creates a strong and permanent bond to keep your projects looking their best for years to come.
Use the wax rhinestone picker and fill the left lens of the Spectrespecs with light blue rhinestones. Make sure they are placed with the flat side down! Gently press the rhinestone into the adhesive, and it will release from the picker. I started placing the rhinestones around the outer edges of the lens first, and then worked my way to the center.
Now you can slip the Luna Lovegood Spectrespecs Bling Straw Topper onto the straw of your favorite tumbler to show off your magical weirdness while staying hydrated!
Now it's time to add some *bling* to these Spectrespecs! Gather your blinging materials, which include
2mm rhinestones in hot pink, light blue, and purple, and E6000 Adhesive with Precision Tips. My rhinestone packages came with one, but you will also need a wax rhinestone picker (the same kind used with diamond painting) and tweezers. The clear E6000 Adhesive is the adhesive we all know and love, but now you can get it with Precision Tips! This allows you to add adhesive, a little at a time to small areas. Start by covering half of the left lens with a thin layer of adhesive to start.
Tip: Adhesive will likely continually ooze from the tip, so I would recommend immediately removing and replacing it with the cap whenever the adhesive is not in use.
Repeat the same process to cover the right lens, but use the purple rhinestones instead.
I learned throughout the process to not cover large areas with adhesive. By the time I got to the other half of the lens, the adhesive was already starting to dry. So, I would recommend working in small sections - add a little adhesive, cap the adhesive, add rhinestones, and then repeat.
Once the lenses are covered, apply E6000 Adhesive to the left or right side of the Spectrespecs and cover the rest of the glasses with hot pink rhinestones.
Here's my straw topper with one side covered in rhinestones! I love all of that sparkle!! It took me about 30-45 minutes to cover this side, but it was actually quite relaxing for me. The process reminded me a lot of diamond painting, which I really enjoy!!
Now, turn the straw topper over and cover the glasses and lenses with the colored rhinestones the same way as the front.
Once both sides have been covered, the last step is to add hot pink rhinestones to the top of the straw topper. This step is totally optional, but I really love how it looks!
IMPORTANT: Make sure to not actually put your mouth on the straw topper - it's for decoration only!!
As always, I would love to hear what you think about this sparkly Spectrespecs Bling Straw Topper! If you make any of these projects for yourself, I'd love to see your creations! Tag me on Instagram and Facebook, or leave a comment/photo on the project pin on Pinterest! #AFMCrafts
