SAFETY FIRST: Before getting started, wear disposable gloves, protect your workspace, and be sure to work in a well-ventilated area!
Prepare 1oz (30ml) of Amazing Clear Cast resin according to package directions. Pour in equal parts of resin and hardener to the mixing cup. Slowly stir the resin together with a stir stick for two minutes. If the resin looks cloudy or has any streaks running through it, you need to keep stirring it until it becomes clear.
Add 1-2 drops of yellow translucent resin dye and a generous amount of yellow iridescent glitter into the resin. Stir the resin mixture with a clean stir stick until evenly incorporated. Give the resin a few minutes to "rest" and allow the bubbles to rise to the top.
Slowly pour the resin into each of the lemon slice molds until they are filled to the top. To prevent a lot of trimming later, make sure not to overfill the molds! Let the resin sit for a few minutes, then use a straw, heat gun, or spritz with 91% alcohol to remove any air bubbles that rise to the top.
Leave the resin to cure in an undisturbed, well ventilated area for 12-24 hours. You will know that the resin is completely cured when it is no longer tacky to the touch.
Carefully remove the cured pieces from the mold. Trim away any excess resin with scissors or a craft knife. If the resin still feels flexible, it may just need more time to cure. Let the pieces sit in a warm, flat area to cure for a few hours (or days).
It's kind of hard to tell that the lemon slices are, in fact, lemon slices straight out of the mold because they are solid yellow. To add some contrast, you need to add some paint to the albedo of the lemon. You can do this with an acrylic paint marker or with paint and a small detail brush. Personally, I think marker is a lot easier.
Carefully color in all of the lines and the center of the lemon slices with paint. Try not to get it everywhere else, but don't panic if you do. Let the paint dry completely.
Don't worry if you accidentally "color outside the lines" and get paint on other parts of the lemon slices. To clean up any mistakes, dip the end of a cotton swab into some alcohol. Carefully rub the swab over any areas and wipe clean with a paper towel to remove the paint.
To help protect the paint from being scratched off, I would recommend giving the earrings a coat of clear sealant.
There isn't a hole in the lemon slices, so we have to improvise to turn them into earrings. Use jewelry pliers to carefully twist an eye screw through the side of each lemon slice. There isn't a "top" or "bottom" to the slice, so I just went straight above one of the lines of the lemon. Be careful to not place the screw in at an angle and have it come out through the front!
Use the jewelry pliers to open the bottom loop of the earring hooks. Loop the earring hooks through the hole in the eye screw and use the pliers to close the hooks.
These earrings are light and colorful, which make them the perfect summer accessory. I would love to hear what you think about this pair of Resin Lemon Slice Earrings!
