These Jack Skellington Rice Krispie Treats put a Tim Burton twist on a classic recipe!
To make your own Jack Skellington Rice Krispie Treats, you will need just 6 simple ingredients: mini marshmallows, butter, crispy rice cereal, gel food dyes, and sprinkles! These treats are so simple to make, and the kids will love helping put them together.
Another great thing about having kids help with this recipe is that you can whip it up using just your microwave. No heating up your stove or oven for these goodies!
Once you've melted the marshmallows with the butter, the mixture turns into an off-white shade. To help make it whiter to represent the white part of Jack's iconic stripes, add in a bit of white gel food dye. Stir the mixture until the dye has been evenly combined.
If you want the white layers to be really white, it will actually take a lot of white dye - which can get pricey. So, unless you really want those layers super white, I'd recommend not going overboard with the dye and just use the recommended amount listed in the recipe.
If you want to adjust the yellow-ish tint even more, you could add just a touch of purple to it. When I say just a touch, I mean like the tip of a toothpick at a time. If you add too much, you risk making it into a light purple or gray instead.
Gently stir in the crispy rice cereal, and make sure it's all been coated well. An important thing to note is to be mindful of the recipe measurements. If the ratios are off, your treats could end up being either too dry or too wet. If they’re too wet, they won't stick together well and will become a mess as you try to eat them. If the treats are too dry, they’ll be hard to bite and not as enjoyable.
Pack the cereal mixture into the bottom of a greased 9"x13" cake pan. Use your hands or the bottom of a flat-bottomed measuring cup to press it down into an even layer. The mixture will be very sticky, so I would recommend spraying your hands or the measuring cup well with cooking spray before pressing the layers down to prevent them from becoming a sticky mess.
For the next layer, mix up another batch of melted marshmallows and butter in the microwave. This time, add in some black gel food dye to the mixture instead. Stir well to mix the dye into the mixture. If the black dye looks more dark purple than black, add about 3 drops of yellow food dye to help make it pitch black.
Add cereal to the black marshmallow mixture, and stir well to combine. Grease your hands or a measuring cup well, and press this layer right on top of the previous one, making sure to pack into a nice, even layer in the pan.
Repeat the process two more times, so that you have a total of four evenly-packed layers. Alternate the white and black layers so that the second black layer ends up on the top.
Immediately add a generous amount of white Jimmy Sprinkles to the top of the treats for that spooky black and white Jack Skellington look!
Pans tend to give the treats a rounded edge, so here's a tip if you want to give the treats a uniform shape. Turn the pan upside-down to remove the treats from the pan in one big piece. Use a sharp knife to trim the outer edges off of the treats to make perfect squares. If you use a dull knife, you risk smashing the treats as you cut, which will mess up the look of the striped layers.
Leave the treats to cool completely at room temperature for at least 4 hours. If you try to cut the treats or eat them while they are still warm, they will fall apart very easily.
