Add some extra sparkle to your hot cocoa station with this Hot Cocoa Glass Block Decor!
The weather is getting colder, which means it's finally hot cocoa season! There are so many creative cocoa creations, which makes the freezing winter weather a little more bearable. As an ode to my favorite winter beverage, I'm putting together a small cocoa station in my kitchen, complete with this *sparkling* new piece of glass block decor. Even better - I am sharing the FREE cut file in this tutorial so that you can make this project for your own home!
To make your own Hot Cocoa Glass Block Decor, you will need these supplies:
- Glass Block (with hole)
- Beacon Glitter-It!
- Brown Glitter
- Hot Cocoa Cut File (for personal use only)
- Cricut or other cutting machine
- Adhesive Vinyl
- Weeding Tools
- Transfer Tape
- Ribbon and Snowflake Trim
- Decorative Beads
- Glue Gun
First, you will need a glass block. Any size or shape will do, as long as it has an opening. Remove the lid from the block, and clean the inside of it out well with a mixture of vinegar and water, or alcohol. Let the block dry completely.
Next, you will need some brown glitter. For best results, I would recommend using glitters in a mixture of fine and chunky, and different shades of brown. You can usually find pre-mixed packages of glitter, but I unfortunately didn't have any. Instead, I made my own by combining a bunch of different brown glitters into a mixing cup. Look at all that sparkle!!
Place a piece of paper towel over the opening on the block and gently shake the block to cover the rest of the inside of the block, especially the area around the opening, with the glitter. Pour the excess glitter into a clean cup and then place it into a resealable bag or container to use on another project. Leave the glass block open to finish drying.
*Here's a great tutorial on how to upload your own images into Cricut Design Space.
Cover the vinyl with some clear transfer tape. Press the transfer tape down well with a scraper tool to get rid of any air bubbles and to make sure that the vinyl sticks well to the transfer tape. Turn the vinyl over, and scrape the back side as well.
Slowly peel the vinyl backing away from the vinyl. If any vinyl is still sticking, lay the backing back down and scrape it again.
Center the vinyl on the front of the glass block and use the scraper tool to press it down well. Slowly peel the transfer tape away. If vinyl is coming up with the tape, lay it back down and scrape it again until it sticks.
Next, make a little bow to put on the top of the glass block. I used a mix of red ribbon, white glitter ribbon, and snowflake trim. I paired 3 pieces of the red ribbon and white glitter ribbon in the same lengths, and folded them into a "V" so that the right sides are both facing front. Cut two pieces of snowflake trim and fold them the same way.
Arrange the ribbons into a semi-circle shape and use a glue gun to hold them in place.
Put the lid back on the glass block. Wrap a piece of red ribbon around the block and glue the ends in place on the bottom side. Center the ribbon bow piece on the top of the block, and glue it into place. Add some striped or shimmery decorative beads as an accent in front of the bow.
Now the Hot Cocoa Glass Block Decor piece is complete, and ready to be put on display! I am thrilled with how this turned out, and love even more that the glitter is contained. This is such a fun and simple project to make, and hope that you love it as much as I do! As always, I would love to see your creations!
