Easily create handmade yarn pom poms to use for all kinds of projects!
Can you believe that I have never made a pom pom before? I have made a few attempts at it, but just couldn't get it quite right. With a little help from the Red Heart Pom & Tassel Maker, I can finally say that I can now successfully make pom poms in ANY color and ANY size!! It's such a great tool that crafters of ALL ages and skill levels can use, plus it's a lot of fun! I've been so excited to share how easy pom poms can be to make - and I hope it inspires you to try it for yourself!!
To make your own yarn pom poms, you will need these supplies:
The Pom & Tassel Maker comes with three separate sections and two pegs. You can use one, two, or all three sections together to make multiple poms or tassels at once ranging in sizes from 1″ to 12″! Of course, there are also helpful instructions included to walk you through the pom/tassel making process.
Tie the end of the yarn around one of the pegs and then wrap the yarn around both pegs. Wrap the yarn so that it's snug, but not too tight that it pulls the pegs out. Keep in mind that the more yarn you wrap around the pegs, the more full the pom poms will be. When you are finished wrapping, cut the end of the yarn with scissors.
Decide how many pom poms you want to make, and cut 8"-10" lengths of yarn and place them into the grooves in equal intervals (refer to the instructions for specifics).
Bring the strands of yarn straight up and tie them tightly around the wrapped yarn. For example, this setup will make three 3" pom poms!!
More ties means more pom poms, but they will be smaller in size. If you attach the third Pom & Tassel Maker piece in the center, you can make even MORE poms at one time!! These pom poms measured about 1 1/2"!!
Use sharp scissors and cut through the yarn in between each of the ties to form even-sized pom poms. For the end pom poms, pull the pegs out and cut through the yarn loops.
After separating the pom poms, they are a little misshapen. Roll the pom in your hands to fluff it up, and use scissors to trim them into make them perfectly round.
That's it!! Making pom poms couldn't be easier, and they are so fluffy. In fact, they are better than ones you buy in the store - plus, you can have the satisfaction of knowing you made them yourself.
I ended up having so much fun that I spent hours making poms in a variety of sizes and colors. I mean, there are about 110 colors of Red Heart yarn, so just imagine the collection of poms and tassels you can make!! Honestly, I can't wait to use my freshly handmade collection of pom poms for future projects!!
