Make a set of eye-catching marbled coasters using Unicorn SPiT Metallic Gel Stain!
To make your own Unicorn Spit Marbled Coasters, you will need these supplies:
- Unicorn SPiT Metallic Gel Stain - Poseidon, Mercury, Zeus
- Unfinished Wood Coasters
- Plastic Wrap
- Sealant
This Unicorn SPiT project can get a little messy, so protect your work surface with some plastic wrap. Lay the coasters right on top of the plastic and leave a little space in between each one. Dip a paper towel in water and wipe the coasters down well to get them damp. Adding water to your surface before applying Unicorn SPiT will help it absorb into the wood better, giving you a more vibrant finish.
Next, add some Mercury Metallic Unicorn SPiT to the coasters, working around the Poseidon drops.
Lastly, add in some Zeus Metallic Unicorn SPiT around the other two colors. The surface doesn't have to be completely covered, so just add the stain wherever you want the pops of gold to be.
Now that the globs of Metallic Unicorn SPiT are on the top of the coasters, Cut four pieces of plastic wrap that are slightly larger than the coasters. Hold the plastic between both hands and lay it flat on top of the coaster.
With your fingertip, tap lightly over the plastic to press the gel stain globs down to fill in the bare spots and to slightly blend the colors with each other. I also gently pulled on the edges of the plastic to bring some stain down, and then tapped around the edges of the coaster to add color. Repeat the process for each coaster.
When you are done tapping and manipulating the coasters, grab one corner of the plastic and slowly peel it up to reveal the marbled masterpiece underneath. Isn't it gorgeous?! I love how the colors look next to each other and how the specks of iridescent micas in the Metallic Unicorn SPiT shimmer in the light!!
If you want to add more marbling, simply lay the plastic back down and press it a little bit again with your fingertips. When you peel it back, the colors will have blended a little bit more. You can see the difference in the image above: the coaster on the left is the first peel, and the one on the right is after blending it a second time.
It's so cool how no two coasters will look alike, but are still part of a set because of the matching colors of Metallic Unicorn SPiT! If you're new to it, this is such a fun way to get started with Unicorn SPiT without the pressure of feeling like it needs to be perfect.
Because the Unicorn SPiT is a little thick, it may take a few hours to dry. I left mine out in a well-ventilated area overnight just to be sure. Once the coasters were dry, I was also surprised to see that the stain absorbed into the coasters for an even application - no bubbles or high spots like marbled acrylic paint can do.
Because the Unicorn SPiT stain is water-based, you need to seal the coasters before using. Spray them well with a few coats of sealant, or even cover the tops with a layer of resin. Once dried (or cured), the coasters are ready for use! These would make a great gift, and they are so simple to make. I can't wait to make more sets of them using all of the Unicorn SPiT colors!!
