Create an adorably sweet Felt Gingerbread House Ornament for the holidays!
To make your own felt gingerbread house ornament, you will need these supplies:
- Gingerbread House Pattern (for personal use only)
- Anchor Spooled Embroidery Floss
- Felt - especially one in a "gingerbread" color
- Embroidery Needle
- Marker or Straight Pins
- Scissors
- Natural Jute Twine
- Poly-Fil
I've got two different types of pattern files to help you create a Gingerbread House Ornament. There is a PDF Gingerbread House Pattern that makes it easy to hand-cut the felt pattern pieces. There is also an SVG Gingerbread House Pattern that makes it possible to cut the felt pieces out with your favorite cutting machine! Both patterns are for personal use only.
Download and print the PDF pattern or cut the SVG pattern with your cutting machine. When using the PDF pattern, cut the pattern out and then trace the pieces onto felt using a marker or mark with straight pins. Carefully cut the pieces out using fabric scissors Next, gather your embroidery needles and choose what colors of embroidery floss you want to use.
This embroidery thread from Anchor is totally new to me, and it is now going to be my go-to for embroidery! It's available in 438 solid colors and 12 multi-colors that come SPOOLS! The spools have 25% more floss than skeins, and rolls smoothly off the spool. It also makes clean-up a breeze when you're done because you don't have to wind the thread back onto a card. Simply put the spool away!
Unwind a length of embroidery floss from the spool, and thread all six strands onto an embroidery needle and knot the end. Stitch the roof, window, and door onto the house base using a variety of straight stitches, chain stitches, and French knots. While working on this project, I was especially impressed that the floss didn't tangle or knot ONE time!
Once the front of the gingerbread house is completed, place the blank house blank on the backside of the front. Use a blanket stitch around the edge to attach the two pieces together, but leave a small opening at the top.
Isn't this little gingerbread ornament the cutest? This project is really quite simple to make, and is a fun project that even a beginner to embroidery would enjoy. You can practice all kinds of stitches to get a different look to each house.
Creatively Beth and Me & My Inklings also made embroidered gingerbread houses with their own printable patterns. Be sure to check out their tutorials and see how they used Anchor Spooled Embroidery Floss to make their ornaments!
