Modern Clay Earrings

Make some stylish Modern Clay Earrings with Liquid Sculpey!

Modern Clay Earrings

I'm always excited to find new craft supplies to try out, and I must say that Liquid Sculpey has me hooked! It's such a fun medium for any crafting level to use to create jewelry, like these Modern Clay Earrings. If you're nervous to jump into resin or sculpting with polymer clay, Liquid Sculpey is the perfect in-between. I like that it has the freedom of pouring like resin, but is quick and easy to use like clay!

Liquid Sculpey Polymer Clay

You can find Liquid Sculpey is easy to use, comes in a variety of colors, and can be used for so many different types of projects. For these 3 pairs of earrings, I used Liquid Sculpey in Copper Metallic, Black, Pearl, Peacock Pearl, Navy Metallic, and Gold.

Earring Silicone Molds

Find an oven-safe jewelry silicone mold with shapes you like. I personally chose this mold because of the popular modern shapes being used in jewelry right now. However, there are so many more molds out there to fit every style and project!

Teal Liquid Sculpey

Before pouring the Liquid Sculpey into the molds, you need to be sure to shake and/or stir the bottle really well. Twist the nozzle all the way open, and slowly fill the parts of the mold that you want to use. If you are adding details to a project or the earrings, only open the nozzle a little bit for more control of the flow.

I found it best to fill all of the mold cavities halfway first, then pop any bubbles that rise to the top with a toothpick. Then fill the mold up the rest of the way and pop the bubbles again. When I filled mold cavities all the way full in one go, I always ended up with little bubbles trapped in the corners or on the face of the project.

If the Liquid Sculpey is a little too thick for you to work with, you can thin it out with some Sculpey Clay Softener. If it's too thin, you can thicken it up by pouring it into a cup and letting it sit out overnight.

Repeat the process to fill all of the earring molds you want to use. Another great thing about Liquid Sculpey is that it's self-leveling, so you don't need to worry about misshapen jewelry pieces!

Lightly tap the mold on your workspace to bring any stubborn bubbles to the top to pop them. Be careful not to overfill the molds, but if you do - don't panic. Clean-up is easier after baking!

Put the molds onto a baking sheet and bake at 275ºF for 15 minutes. If your molds are thicker, you will need to bake for longer (about 15 minutes for every 1/4").

*As you can see, I tried a little bit of marbling for one of the pieces. Let's just say that I definitely need more practice!!

Modern Clay Earring Pieces

Once the baking is done, let the pieces cool completely before removing from the molds. Once cooled, carefully remove the pieces. They will still be a little flexible, so don't think you messed anything up!

Use small scissors or a craft blade to remove any over-poured clay. Any spills on the mold will peel right off.

The earring pieces came out with a satin finish. If you want a glossy finish, you can paint the pieces with Sculpey Gloss Glaze.

Jewelry Pliers

The first pair of earrings I assembled were the Pearl and Peacock Pearl "arch" set. For this pair, you will need six 10mm jump rings, and a set of earring hooks.

Use jewelry pliers to open the jump ring. Hook the ring through the top of the arch piece. Next, loop the earring hook onto the jump ring and then close it. To finish the earrings, attach the white half-circles to the bottoms of the arch with jump rings.

I absolutely love how this pair of arch earrings turned out! The Peacock Pearl will add a gorgeous pop of color to any outfit, and has the perfect amount of sparkle.

Use jewelry pliers to open four jump rings. Connect the Copper Metallic and Black earring pieces with two rings each. Hook another jump ring through the hole in the top center of the black piece and attach the earring hook before closing the jump ring.

Modern Clay Half-Circle Earrings

I love the pairing of the solid black with the metallic copper! These earrings make a statement, but are more neutral to match almost anything you wear. I just love them!!

Modern Clay Earrings Backs

For the last pair of earrings, I paired the Navy Metallic and Gold Liquid Sculpey colors. Hook a jump ring through the holes to connect the pieces together. Use some strong adhesive to attach earring posts to the back of the gold pieces.

Let the adhesive dry completely before wearing!

Modern Clay Hoop Earrings

These hoop earrings are simple, but chic. I love how the circles work together, the navy and gold mix, and of course, the shimmer of the metallic!

Modern Clay Earrings Set

Isn't it amazing that in just a small amount of time, you can create multiple sets of unique earrings out of clay?! I am so excited to wear these earrings everywhere I go and to make more pairs to share with friends as gifts.

Needless to say, Liquid Sculpey is a lot of fun to use, and I'm really looking forward to spending more time crafting with it to see what else I can come up with!
