Make one sign with interchangeable decor to easily switch from Fall to Halloween!
Wouldn't it be nice to not have to change out your Fall and Halloween Decorations? Once the temperature drops (even just a little), I am putting out the pumpkins and getting the house ready for fall! Suddenly, it's October, and then I get everything out for Halloween. When the clock strikes November - BOOM - we're back to fall! I decided to make this Interchangeable Fall/Halloween Sign to make decorating just a little bit easier, and to take up less storage space. It's a fun and simple project to make, and I'm excited to show you how to make one for yourself! This Wood Plank Sign comes unfinished and ready to be customized! I wanted to keep the natural wood grain instead of covering it with paint, but it still needed some color. To darken the color and add some protection to the wood, I decided to use some Minwax Express Color in Pecan.
This stain is easy to use, and I highly recommend it if you are new to using stains. Simply wipe the stain onto the sign with a cloth, then wipe off the excess. Let the stain dry for an hour or so, and that's it! The stain is water-based, so all you need is a little soap and water to clean up!
For my fall decor, I used this adorable Pumpkin Spice Fall Wood Cutout and some FolkArt Color Shift acrylic paint and, of course, a bit of FolkArt Glitteriffic paint for some sparkle!
Paint just the border and the lines between the words with a couple coats of orange FolkArt Color Shift acrylic paint. Paint the words with a few coats of white Folkart Multi-Surface paint. Once dry, cover all of the orange paint with gold or copper FolkArt Glitteriffic paint. Let the paint dry completely.
I attached a couple of Velcro dots to the back of the pumpkin cutout and the opposite pieces to the sign. This way, the cutout is attached securely to the sign, but is also simple to remove.
I chose to use this "Hocus Pocus" Halloween Wood Cutout for my sign. Isn't it adorable?! Again, I used FolkArt Color Shift acrylic paint and Folkart Multi-Surface paint.
Paint the cauldron part of the cutout with black Folkart Multi-Surface paint and let it dry completely. The words "Hocus Pocus" are painted in Purple Flash FolkArt Color Shift acrylic paint, and the bubbles are painted in Emerald FolkArt Color Shift acrylic paint. Once the paint is dry, cover the letters in purple FolkArt Glitteriffic paint, and the bubbles with green FolkArt Glitteriffic paint for extra Halloween sparkle! Let the paint dry completely.
Attach a couple of Velcro dots to the back of the Halloween cutout in the same place. Set the opposite pieces aside since the sign already has some attached. Now you can easily interchange the cutouts for fall and Halloween! Hang the sign in your home, on the front door, or anywhere you like to keep your decor. If you find similar cutouts for other seasons and holidays, you could use this one sign for the entire year!
