One of our favorite movies we saw this summer was Illumination Entertainment's Minions movie. It's finally out on DVD, so I decided to make some minions-inspired donuts to eat at our family Minions movie night!
Target is your perfect one stop shop for all your movie night needs. As you enter Target, you should be able to see the display for Minions © 2015 Universal Studios. All rights reserved. The Target-exclusive Metalpak Blu-Ray/DVD – Deluxe Version includes 40 minutes of exclusive content, including a Minions Party Planner. From invitations, to decorations, to recipes and everything in-between, the minions will help you create an amazing party!
After the donuts have completely cooled, you can prepare the icing. If you have a favorite icing recipe, feel free to use it!! I took the easy route and heated up a can of vanilla frosting in the microwave for about 30 seconds. Stir until it's a smooth consistency. Add about 5 drops of yellow food coloring in, and mix until the color is evenly distributed throughout the icing.
Find a bowl that will fit a donut (I just used a regular cereal bowl) and pour the icing in. Now, just dip the donuts into the icing, then lift straight up. Turn your wrist a little as you lift the donut so you can get the donut to stop dripping. Set on the cooling rack.
Once your donuts are all dipped, sprinkle generously with some bright yellow nonpareils. Donuts are always better with sprinkles, so go as wild as a minion with bananas!
To turn these regular donuts into Minions donuts, they need some eyes and goggles. Grab some white and milk chocolate chips, as well as some gray (or black & white) candy melts. Unless you want to freehand them, you'll also need a guide to work from. Lucky for you, I've got a free printable minions goggles pattern, which includes 4 double eyes and 6 single eyes!! Place the print on a cookie sheet, then layer some wax paper on top.
Add some gray candy melts into a bowl and microwave for one minute. Stir and microwave another 20-30 seconds until everything is melted and a smooth consistency. If you are using black & white candy melts, add one black melt for every two white melts (I think I added about 14 whites and 7 blacks to make enough goggles for 12 donuts). Pour the gray chocolate into a baggie and cut off a small corner or use a icing bag with a small tip. Trace the outer border of all the eyes/goggles so that you have a bunch of circles and figure 8s (left image above).
To fill in the eyes, melt some white chocolate and pour it into a baggie or icing bag. Fill in the inside of the gray circles. For the double eyes, you can immediately place a chocolate chip point-side down for the irises. For the single eyes, melt about 1/4 cup of milk chocolate chips and pipe them on the white chocolate.
Place the cookie sheet with the eyes in the fridge for at least 10 minutes to set.
Peel the eyes off the wax paper and press them down on the center of the donuts. I kept things simple by only adding the eyes and goggles, but you can also use some black decorating gel to add hair, mouths, and goggle bands. After your donuts are finished, you can get that Minions party started!
While I was at Target I was able to pick up all the ingredients I needed to bake some Minions Donuts! I saved money by purchasing the Market Pantry brand of ingredients like chocolate chips, sour cream, and other baking supplies.
