As a kid, I remember going with my family to see Disney’s The Little Mermaid in theaters. I fell in love with the movie immediately and drew characters from the movie all the time. When it was finally released on VHS (the OLD days), I was ecstatic when we purchased it to watch every day! I eventually memorized the entire movie, and it is still one of my favorites today. When I heard about the new LEGO Disney The Little Mermaid set, I knew I had to have it! This LEGO Disney Ariel and the Magical Spell set is easy to build and perfect for fans of Disney’s The Little Mermaid to reenact their favorite scenes or create new stories of their own.
One of my favorite parts about building with LEGO is that everyone has their own way of doing it! Some work by dumping all the pieces together, then working piece by piece. My daughter has always been one to organize the pieces by color, then follows the instructions meticulously to build the sets. By sorting this way, she seems to find the pieces she needs quickly and easily. So next time your kids are building, take a minute to notice how they do it!
Recommended for ages 5-12, this 222-piece set offers age-appropriate build and play experience. My daughter was able to read the easy-to-follow, illustrated instructions all on her own and was so proud of herself once she finished building.
Unless things get really messed up, my daughter refuses to let anyone help her build these sets. However, I am asked to watch the entire time because I have the important job of putting the stickers on. Her independence and apparent lack of sticker skills makes me laugh every time. These are the moments that I will always try to remember.
The first part of the set she completed was Ariel's cave. She thought it was so cool that she was able to build a working sliding glass door for her to swim through to get to her room! This part of the build took the longest, but it's definitely worth it. I love the attention to detail and how colorful everything is!
Once Ariel swims through the door to her room, she can sit at her vanity with a pink clamshell seat to brush and add a flower to her hair.
There's also a seat on the opposite side of the room to sit and enjoy a cookie, and a refreshing drink from a goblet she probably found in a sunken ship!
Speaking of things found in a sunken ship, Ariel can swim above her cave to admire her "whosits and whatsits galore"! Accessories like coins, gems, and other "thingamabobs" fill up the treasure chest, which sits in between a ship’s wheel and the iconic Prince Eric statue.
Ursula’s grotto reminds me a lot of her grotto in the movie, including potion bottles, lipstick (of course) and a buildable crystal globe to contain Ariel’s voice! You'll also see Ursula wearing the magical necklace that will eventually break the spell.
Ursula's really quite the business woman when you think about it. Making trades with poor unfortunate souls for spells, like Ariel giving up her beautiful voice to be able to have legs instead of a fin makes her a very busy woman! Will the Ursula manage to persuade Ariel to sign the contract?
"Now, sing!"
"Aa-aa-aah, a-aa-aah"
"Aa-aa-aah, a-aa-aah"
"Keep singing!"
"Aa-aa-aah, a-aa-aah"
"Aa-aa-aah, a-aa-aah"
To help her transform from mermaid to human, place Ariel inside the revolving stand and swap Ariel’s mermaid tail for legs!
"Look at ya! Look at ya! There's something different. Don't tell me. I got it. It's your hairdo, right? You've been using the dinglehopper, right?"
This is such a fun set! Kids (and kids at heart) are going to have hours of fun reliving moments from Disney’s The Little Mermaid and creating new stories of their own with these iconic characters.
For more Little Mermaid fun, I've put together a free printable Little Mermaid-themed word search that kids of all ages are going to love!
